  2. I’d add another genre holiday tradition – the ghost story for Christmas (and there is a Doctor Who connection in a moment). While MR James began telling his friends his ghost stories live around the holidays (and the wonderful Robert Lloyd Parry continues this tradition now, performing as James), adaptations of his works and those of Dickens and other writers were a BBC staple of the holidays in the late 1960s and 1970s, with the odd revival here and there since. As most probably know, these were a huge influence on Mark Gatiss, and his documentary on James is fantastic, as was his version of The Tractate Middoth a few years back. If you like medieval manuscripts and creepy academic horror, look up some of the old BBC Ghost Stories for Christmas (and read some MR James!).
