Comments on: "Ep 174 – A Kicky-Stabby Remembrance" (1)
Oh, this was a fun episode, and I actually have comments to share! First, Liz, your niece is far from alone! I well remember the collective gasp of fandom when that Dalek first climbed the stairs in 1988. I heard stories of group viewings of people all shouting “Take the stairs!” only to fall into stunned silence moments later. I wonder how badly the Internet would have broken that day if it had existed back then.
I also want to sing the praises of the “Remembrance” novelization, which was groundbreaking in so many ways and really paved the way for the New Adventures and a lot of post-cancellation “Doctor Who” fiction. More than most other novelizations, “Remembrance” really expanded both the story and the characters’ backgrounds. The novel is where we first learn about Ace’s best friend Manisha and how skinheads firebombed their flat because her family was Pakistani. If I’m remembering my timeline correctly, Marc Platt then picked up on that and actually put the incident onscreen in “Ghost Light”. And Gilmore and Jensen get an ill-fated romance between them in flashback that Gilmore had to end because Rachel is Jewish. (I’ve been wanting to rewatch “Remembrance” for a while anyway, maybe I should also reread the novelization!)
