Comments on: "The Macra Terror Does Not Exist" (1)

  1. Thanks for another awesome episode, Verities! Like you all I adore The Macra Terror and am gutted that I can’t see the original episodes. I think they have done a great job with the animation and I do enjoy watching the animated episodes, both in colour and in black and white – though I’ve not tried mixing them up yet!

However, my preferred way to watch the lost stories has always been the reconstructions and the changes they have made to this story in particular really reinforce this choice for me. I agree with you Deb that losing the Highland Fling exit is just too sad, and taking out the Doctor throwing himself into the rough and tumble machine?! Unforgivable!

Back in the day my only avenue to experience these stories was the audio cassettes and so the discovery of fan made Recons was a bit of a revelation for me. I understand how difficult maintaining focus and interest in the static images can be, but I still love seeing the pictures of how the episode really looked and hearing the whole story without the cuts they have had to make in the animations.

And the great thrill I still get when watching the recons are those precious moments when the static images suddenly come to life! Where tiny snippets of existing footage suddenly appear within an episode, and for a few seconds you are seeing the actual lost story! In Macra Terror it’s the Australian censor cuts of Polly and Ben struggling against a Macra, and the death of the real Controller, in episode 2. When watching the recons it is like the story becomes so exciting at those points that the images simply can’t resist beginning to move! Seeing these kind of precious moments in the context of the whole story is still a huge joy for me.

I have to add that seeing the tiny bits off air footage of Dodo and Steven parting at the end of The Savages brings me to tears every time!
