Six Smart Women Discussing Doctor Who

211 – A Good Man Goes to War Games

Join Deb, Kat, and Tansy as they reach waaay back to 2011 to re-examine the story that began (ended? landed the middle? it’s hard to tell with peak S6-Moffat) the whole “The Doctor is the most fearsome thing in the Universe” lark. No, I didn’t misspell “arc”. They dive into tropes, power dynamics, issues of morality, the difficulties of (and sexism surrounding) introducing a baby subplot, and how words and titles have meanings. Oh, and how Regency dress and laser guns really really work for us. AND we announce a 7th Anniversary give-away!

How do you feel about this turn in the Doctor mythos? Did you think this was a satisfactory conclusion to The Mystery of River Song? Do you want Tansy to give you a bespoke Big Finish Rec? Leave us a comment or drop us a tweet and let us know!

Extra! – 7 Fave Master Stories

Time for more favourites! Join Erika, Katrina, and Liz as we list our favourite Master stories from the history of Doctor Who — in one case, both on-screen and off! According to Liz, an alternate title for this episode could be “a podcast of betrayal”.

What are your faves? Let us know in the comments!

210 – Asylum of The Daleks’ Master Plan

This week Deb, Erika, Liz and Tansy revisit an oft maligned (by Deb) story — “The Daleks’ Master Plan”. There are a few disagreements as to pace, plot, story, Katarina… and while may not all agree on which companion actually clocks in as the official 7th companion in Doctor Who history, we do all agree that Sara Kingdom is a BAMF.

How do you feel about this “epic” adventure? Is it a rambling mess? A beloved Doctor Who romp or BOTH? And what is your preferred method for consuming this phantom of a story? Leave us a comment or send us a tweet and let us know how you feel about Bret, Sara, The Meddling Monk or any one of the other 1,183 plot points in “The Daleks’ Master Plan”?

What do you think of this story? Is received fan wisdom correct this time? Or is this episode pure gold silver? Let us know in the comments!

208 – 7 Nation Army of Ghosts/Doomsday Tripper

Okay, this “7” is a stretch but we made it work. Join Deb, Lynne, and Tansy as we dissect the rollicking, emotional, and devastating story duo of “Army of Ghosts” and “Doomsday”.

We give credit to 8 y.o. RTD (the obvious creator of the Dalek v. Cyberman smackdown) while calling out the emotional manipulation he inflicted upon both Jackie and Rose. But we all come together in our adoration Yvonne Hartman’s confidence (and tailoring) and Mickey Smith’s swagger.

What are your favorite bits of this, literally, epic two-parter? Or was the emotional manipulation just a bit too much? Let us know what you think in the comments!

207 – Ghost Light My Fire

7&7 brings us back to the 7th Doctor! Join Deb, Lizbeth, and Lynne as they discuss “Ghost Light”. They do talk about things other than Ace-in-a-tux, but let’s face it, that’s one of the more important aspects of this story.

How do you feel about Ghost Light? Or about Ace in a tux? Let us know in the comments!

This week we have the seventh story from the seventh year of the only Doctor to stick around that long. Join Deb, Erika, Lynne, and Tansy as we talk over the 4th Doctor’s exit.

How do you feel about “Logopolis”? Is it a touching exit? A bunch of nonsense? A boring slog with just a few moments of joy? Let us know in the comments!

This 7&7 entry comes from the year 1977. That’s two whole 7s! Join Deb, Erika and Katrina as we talk about how much we love Ma Tyler, the echoes we see in RTD’s era of Doctor Who, the relationship between the Doctor and Leela, the many tropes (the good and the bad), and much more!

What do you think about “Image of the Fendahl”? Is it a classic? Middling? Are the baby fendahleen adorable? Let us know in the comments!
